African Child

There is in his world a happiness beyond
The comprehension of Western aid.
It condescends to embrace
Our greater poverty, confounding
Our inconsolable sympathy.
He who has will receive more
And from we who have not
Even that is taken from us.
He lives in a hut in the Boma
Made of manure, ash, and mud.
He steps inside the hole of a door,
His back to the camera; toddling
There, his garment is clean
And blue as the Serengeti sky.
